Shield of 1943-44
Perhaps few people know that it was Fire Fighters team from La Spezia which won the "Wartime Championship in Northern Italy" in 1944, reported as a real football championship. Extremely reputable teams participated to the championship, such as Milan (at that time known as Milano), Inter (Ambrosiana), Juventus, Pro Patria, Atalanta, Bologna, Varese. After the preliminary round for the access to the finals, La Spezia challenged in a semi-final with four teams: Carpi, Suzzara and Modena, and it also regulated Bologna in a glowing playoff. During the final, in Milan, Fire Fighters from La Spezia faced Venezia and Torino, the "Great" Torino of Piola, Gabetto, Ferraris and Mazzola.
The decisive match with the Torino's football club will be a milestone within the history of sport for the Italian Fire Fighters, with the victory of La Spezia, thanks to two goals scored by the unknown fireman Angelini.
The Federal Council of the Italian football Federation, during the meeting of January 22, 2002, deliberated the awarding in memory of the football championship season 1943-'44.
It was deliberated:
- a gold medal of merit to the 42° Fire Department of La Spezia;
- in the limits allowed by federal regulation, the authorization for the "Spezia Calcio 1906 SpA" sports club to affix on its official soccer uniform a distinctive logo, remembering the championship victory in the 1943-'44 season and consisting into the duplication of the won Cup;
- memorial plaque to La Spezia town for the participation.
