National Fire Fighters Sailing Representative

Since 1938 institutionally was assigned to the Fire Fighters the fire fighting duty in the principal Italian ports and therefore, in the Fire Fighters Corp, there are nautical experts and keen on sea (or sea addicted).
In 1992, by the authorization of the old Gymnastic Sports Service, it was established a sailing section nearby the Fire Fighter Sports Group, the ¿A. Gargano¿ section, from the Provincial Fire Fighters Command of Genova.
The reason for the birth of this sports section is inside the same sports features, which requires a good individual theoretic and practical preparation. This preparation is oriented to a team work which schedule a movement synchronization of each component with others trying out continuously the chosen strategy and requiring a continuous modification of a boat race strategy. This is like a Fire Fighter work.
At the beginning, the members was only about ten, an enough number to participate to the Winter Champions of Nautical Circle and to the specific and local boat race like ¿the thousand sails¿ in range of the Genova boat show, the ¿Zegna trophy¿ organized by the Y.C. from Chiavari and also the Winter Championship of Tigullio.
Since 1995 to 2001 a Fire Fighter crew, composed by yachtsman of more Provincial Commands, participates to the Academy Joint Trophy in Livorno, on a boat type ¿J24¿ made available offer from the Navy School Sailing.
In 2002, the Sports Activities Office of Department of Fire Fighters, Public Rescue and Civil Defence, in replacement to the old Gymnastic Sports Service, has confirmed the existence of the National Fire Fighters Sailing Representative and the assignment of coordinator to the Engineer Marco Cavriani, who, in the same time, became the Director of Alessandria Provincial Command and then of Ancona and finally of Reggio Calabria.
In the new configuration of the Sails Activity, the National Representative have to race in the must important National boat races, thanks to the Fire Fighters services by different Provincial Commands and, on the other hand, the Regional Fire Fighters Representatives have to race in the local boat races.
EUROPEAN FIRE FIGHTERS CHAMPIONSHIP
In 1993, thanks to the yachtsman of the others Provincial Commands, the team of Fire Fighters takes part to the European Fire Fighters Sailing Championship in La Rochelle (France). From that time, the Genoese crew participates to all the further European Fire Fighters Sailing Championship up to 2001 ( in this edition 4 Italian Crews participate), suspending the participation to the further and at the same time the last one edition due to the high costs.

During the years, at these event took part crews composed by professional and affirmed national and international sailing champions as Guardia di Finanza team with Skipper Paolo Cian, an expert yachtsman who in the 2002-2003 drove ¿Mascalzone Latino¿ in American¿s Cup, Flavio Favini (Mascalzone Latino¿s Helmsman which participate to the American¿s Cup of 2007), Mauro Pelaschier (Italian Seniores Champion class FIN 66 and 77 ¿ roll of honour of sailing ¿ and Moro di Venezia II¿s Helmsman and also Azzurra¿s Helmsman at the American¿s Cup in 1983) and other of same level.
Also the Navy, the Penitentiary Police and the Air Force took place with their crews in a lot of Italian Sailing laps.
The participation to a boat-race was an event for involving other Provincial Command of Fire Fighters and to contribute to a major diffusion of culture for the sailing passion in National Fire Fighters corps.
In boat-races in fact the staff it was alternate each 3 tests in order that all the yachtsmen could racing, favouring the participation instead of the final result. Thanks to this, the National Fire Fighters Corp have a good number of excellent yachtsman who are, at the same time, not professionals.
Among the Fire Fighters athletes there is also who preferred to give up doing the majority of boat races in order to obtain the function of Sails Federal Instructor, for to spread of this sport among the young; generally Fire Fighters¿ children in summer camps nearby lakes and Italian costs.
It is necessary to remember that the participation of the National Fire Fighters Corp in the Italian Lap it was possible thanks to contribute of Cino Ricci, who had make available offer to a Fire Fighters the rubber dinghy for all the boat races that he was organize. Also in 2008, a Fire Fighters Crew took part to the XX Italian lap in sailing, that began on June 20th in Sistiana (TS) with the inauguration ceremony and with the crews presentation. The ¿lap¿ started on June 20th and ended on July 20th in Ostia after 22 boat races and the Fire Fighters Crew finished 7th general place and 1st among no-professional. And in order to confirm the Fire Fighters¿ vocation for public rescue, on July 20th, at the end of the last boat race, the Fire Fighters Crew worked hard in the rescue of a pleasure boat in distress in the water in front of the port of Ostia, drawing it to berth¿in full sails!
