The earthquake: firefighter's work

The coordination between the Regional Directorate of Abruzzo (Provincial Fire Departments and base camps) and DICOMAC (central coordination structure), set up at the Customs Police training school at L'Aquila, is still continuing.

From April 6th, the Regional Directorate of Abruzzo is coordinating the activities carried out at the 3 base camps and at the Provincial Fire Departments of the Region.

The daily meeting at 17:00, in which those responsible for each base camp and those responsible for the Provincial Fire Departments participate, represents the forum to define what has been done (criticalities and problems emerged during the day are met) and to plan the work for the following days.

This way, fire-fighters can work according to definite, clear and common directives together with all the deployed units.
Moreover, the above-mentioned meetings have standardized the operation procedures to secure the buildings damaged by the earthquake, to demolish with urgency those buildings that cannot be recovered.

The fire-fighters from Provincial Fire Departments are assigned at the base camps in the municipalities struck by the earthquake (see enclosures).

The operations are continuing directed to assist the local population by recovering personal belongings, securing buildings and infrastructures, restoring road networks of devastated towns and villages, and cooperating with Monuments and Fine Arts Office in order to secure important historical buildings (churches, bell towers, monuments) and the recovery, transportation and securing of movable works of art.

Moreover, the Fire-Brigade teams shore unsafe structures, explore cracked or damaged houses, retrieve household goods and generally assist evacuees.

100 engineers of the National Fire Brigade are working in mixed commissions, together with technicians from local bodies and universities who have carried out over 26,000 examinations, to inspect the stability of buildings and to assess damage.

There is also a crisis unit for the Fire Health Service composed of doctors and Fire Brigade personnel with TPSS (first aid techniques).

Total carried out operations: 195.813

Some of the most important operations have been shot and are in the multimedia section.
